Languages other than English While learning an additional language or languages when very young has many benefits, not only for acquiring the language but for personal, social, educational, and cognitive development, it is never too late to start! Older learners can attain very high levels of proficiency. There is also evidence that learning and using another language is good for your brain and can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by up to five years! Valuing and maintaining links with family languages is also very important for cultural identity and and emotional well-being.
